A transgressive act that also exists on YouTube is the uploading of copyrighted material, YouTube users most probably do not own majority of the material they upload which means they are uploading copyrighted material which is in breach of the community guidelines and terms of service.
The following link shows the track list of The Grey Album, a mash-up of Jay-z’s Black album (his vocals) and The Beatle’s White Album (the music samples) i figured i can use this in my essay because it is an example of a mashup which i can debate on whether there is any creative input into the production or if it’s just flat-out copyrighting.
After doing a bit of research i found a couple of links about whether you are allowed to download YouTube videos or not.
Under frequently asked questions i found the rule that states you are not allowed to download YouTube videos but that doesn’t obviously stop s. http://www.youtube.com/t/faq
YouTube is only designed to allow users to watch and upload videos onto the website but clearly people are determined to add another option that would be download. http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001002.htm
Youtube’s Terms of Service
In the second essay we were asked to explore the ways in which individuals can be seen to actively work against the rhetorical position of a text e.g. by producing mash-ups, by pirating material, by finding alternate ways of doing things, by hacking games or cheating systems. We are to analyse the transgressive aspect of a medium of your choice.
At first i was unsure what to talk about as i only knew a few examples of transgressive acts but they weren’t really of my specific interest. So i went to discuss with my tutor about potential topics and after speaking with my tutor he was able to help me discover what i would enjoy talking about as the topic would relate to me in a certain way which could help me express my viewpoints clearer as i would have some sort of knowledge in the chosen subject.
The topics in which i am in favour of deciphering are YouTube ripping and time shifting. YouTube ripping is the act of downloading YouTube videos and allowing the user to ignore assigned adverts, comments and any form of social interaction it also allows the user to adjust audio and visual quality videos are not always of a high-resolution so the idea of tampering allows a sense of freedom which is not the case on YouTube.
The time shifting was based on the fact that digital tv nowadays grants the user to pause during live tv, rewind, record and fast forward. These options provide the audience to have total control because one could pause live tv (me) during the adverts make yourself conveniently busy for the number of minutes allocated to adverts and then resume the program once adverts are approximately over by fast forwarding. The problem with this is that an adverts job is to make the audience purchase whatever is being offered and if users skip adverts on tv the stations providing the adverts are most likely going to lose revenue because the adverts on tv are not being watched as a result tv companies are not doing there jobs. Although we decided this wasn’t a compelling enough example of a transgressive act we thought it merely brushed the surface.
In an attempt to understand the theories put forward i decided to go over my lecture notes and the Powerpoint presentation, i wanted to clarify everything i had learnt so that before i actually begin writing the essay all the theories and topics discussed made sense.
Here are my notes on biopower, détournement, resistance, multitude and tribal consumers.
The question for the essay:
What are the methods, justifications and impacts of transgression on the rhetorics of a media of your choice?
Here is what i believe the essay it asking: Methods – explain why is it a form of transgression or is a transgressive act; Justification – why is it okay to behave in a transgressive manner; Impact – reflective what they’ve actually done for it to be considered as transgression.
Other question to target during the essay:
How are people transgressing the rhetorical position of a text?
What ways do they justify these actions?
What relationship does this have with the development or long-term security of a text?
Biopower, Detourment, Resistance, Multitude and Tribal Consumers are the theories that contextualize the transgressive act, i will also aim to discuss these in the essay as much as i can understand them.
Another game trailer I was thinking about doing was the L.A. Noire. The game is also made by the same people who created the Grand Theft Auto series.
This iPod advert that was released in 2007, was probably what persuaded me to get my first ever iPod so rhetorics must have played a big part in it, it’s an enjoyable advert too bad it only lasts 30 seconds.
One of my favourite movies isTransformers so I thought it would be a good idea to write about, here is the trailer.
Here is a link to a book that I was using in order to help me with my essay, I found it very helpful as they were discussing about the rhetorics in video games.
This is the new Grand Theft Auto V trailer, the trailer was unveiled on the 2nd November 2011. Being a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series i thought an idea for the rhetoric’s essay could be the new one, seen as I’ve played a couple of the previous ones and enjoyed them. (can’t wait for this one!)
